Police Nationwide Protest Over Resources and Working Conditions Amid Rising Insecurity

Police officers in approximately twenty French cities, including Paris, have taken to the streets to protest against what they describe as a "national police in danger" due to insufficient resources and deplorable working conditions. The major police union Alliance has raised alarms about inadequate staffing and support that hinder law enforcement's ability to perform their duties effectively.

Fabien Vanhemelryck, general secretary of the Alliance union, emphasized the urgent need for citizen support, pointing to an increasingly dire situation where police are unable to carry out their responsibilities under normal conditions. He highlighted the poor and unsanitary workplace facilities along with overwhelming workloads faced by officers. Specifically, in Hauts-de-Seine, the police force has suffered a reduction of 200 officers since 2020, exacerbating the problem and leading to catastrophic working conditions impacting operational capacity.

Yannick Le Bihan, another union representative, criticized the government's failure to advance promised reforms, notably the simplification of legal procedures. He stated bluntly that "nothing is functioning as promised," underscoring stagnation in addressing police grievances.

These protests reflect widespread dissatisfaction among the national police with current policies and resourcing, with the unions aiming to raise public awareness and pressure authorities to act.
