Political Decisions Fuel Crisis in French Education System Ahead of 2027 Elections

As France approaches the 2027 presidential elections, critical evaluations reveal deep dissatisfaction and challenges in the French education system. The 14th annual Barometer of Education Professions, presented by Morgane Verviers, Secretary General of UNSA Éducation, surveyed nearly 43,000 education personnel. The findings indicate a stark disconnect between political reforms over the past decade and the actual needs of educators. A significant 65% of education workers believe reforms failed to meet on-the-ground needs, with only 1% feeling conditions have improved. Furthermore, 66% feel unrecognized and disrespected in their profession, an increase from previous years, while 68% rate their working conditions as unsatisfactory, citing growing stress and workplace tensions.

Despite these issues, 90% of personnel love their jobs, and 67% find meaning in their work. Yet, purchasing power remains a major concern for 58%. Verviers emphasized that the crisis in vocational interest is more a political excuse than reality, asserting that political choices have damaged the system and must be addressed for repair. The barometer highlights educators' calls for better consultation in policymaking, with special attention to student well-being, social inequalities, and reducing class sizes.

Compounding workforce dissatisfaction, the latest Pisa 2025 results show a notable decline in student performance in France. Isabelle Henry, president of the French Association for the Teaching of French, criticized the political decisions made in primary education, stressing the negative implications for the country's educational future.

Together, these findings present a sobering portrait of French education challenged by policy failures and workforce distress. They underscore urgent calls for reforms addressing both educator conditions and student outcomes. As the political landscape intensifies ahead of the 2027 elections, education remains a critical issue demanding serious reflection and responsive action.
