Power Outages and Cooling Failures Escalate Amid France's 2026 Heatwave

As France endures an intense heatwave, significant electricity supply disruptions are compounding the crisis, notably with a major power outage in the Finistère region. On Tuesday evening, an explosion at a Réseau Transport d'Électricité (RTE) site caused a widespread blackout, leaving over 38,000 households without power. By Wednesday afternoon, 106,000 households had experienced outages, with emergency services evacuating some residents near Ergué-Gabéric due to the severity of the blasts. Hospitals in Quimper and Pont-l'Abbé were reliant on emergency generators to maintain critical care during the disruptions.

Meanwhile, in the Hauts-de-Seine business district, the company managing the cooling infrastructure announced it will no longer be able to guarantee normal air conditioning operations starting June 25. This raises concerns about the ability of administrative and commercial establishments in the La Défense area to function properly amid soaring temperatures.
