Powerful Tornado Strikes Pomas, Aude: 39 Injured and 300 Homes Damaged

A severe tornado hit the village of Pomas in the Aude department of France on August 24, resulting in 39 injuries, with 15 people hospitalized. The tornado caused extensive damage to roughly 300 homes, marking it as one of the more intense tornado events recorded in the region.

According to Keraunos, the French observatory for severe meteorological events, France experiences between 40 to 50 tornadoes annually, though most are of lower intensity compared to the violent tornado that struck Pomas. Tornadoes in France are categorized using the Fujita scale, ranging from EF0 (winds of 105 to 135 km/h) up to EF5 (winds exceeding 320 km/h). The tornado in Pomas was notably powerful compared to the majority of weak tornadoes typically documented.

Certain regions in France, especially Aude, Indre-et-Loire, Côte-d'Or, and northern departments, are more prone to intense tornadoes rated EF3 or higher. Since the start of record-keeping, nearly 1,300 tornadoes have been identified in France, with 234 confirmed as highly probable. Historic significant tornadoes include the events in Palluel in 1967 and Montville in 1845. These tornado occurrences predominantly happen during the warm season, accounting for nearly two-thirds of documented cases.

While tornadoes pose a serious threat locally, their frequency and intensity in France are considerably lower compared to the United States, where 700 to 1,200 tornadoes typically occur annually, mostly in the Great Plains.

Meteorological conditions remain volatile along the northern French coast, as regional authorities have issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms on August 25 in Seine-Maritime, signaling ongoing weather risks.

The recent tornado exemplifies the challenges France faces with sporadic but sometimes very destructive tornadic activity. The community of Pomas is currently recovering from significant damages and injuries caused by this rare but impactful weather phenomenon.
