Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is at the center of a burgeoning political scandal following accusations about the accuracy of his educational qualifications. On September 29, 2025, the Syndicat national des agents publics de l’Éducation nationale (Snapen) filed a complaint against him for allegedly claiming to possess a master's degree in public law, which he has not completed. According to a report by Mediapart, Lecornu has misrepresented his academic credentials in various professional contexts since 2016, including on his official government biography and LinkedIn profile. The complaint was lodged with the Court of Justice of the Republic, reflecting serious concerns about transparency and credibility in public offices.

In a response to the allegations, Lecornu clarified that he completed a first level master's qualification (master 1) at Université Panthéon-Assas but did not fulfill the requirements for the full master's (master 2) degree due to educational reforms. He termed the controversy as indicative of a broader "social disdain" for public representations of authority. While currently, there is no legal requirement for diploma validation for governmental roles, the accusations raise critical questions about the integrity of educational representations among public officials.

According to Snapen's lawyer, Me Vincent Brengarth, these claims of academic misrepresentation could tarnish the reputation of public university certifications and conflict with the egalitarian principles the Republic stands for. Lecornu's official biography now omits the disputed degree, merely referencing "studies in law at Université Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas."

This scandal emerges at a turbulent time for Lecornu, who is already juggling significant political responsibilities, including negotiating a new government and finalizing the 2026 budget amidst increasing tensions with political adversaries and public sentiment, which may further complicate his position and credibility as Prime Minister.
