PSG Faces UEFA Champions League Playoffs After Failing to Qualify Directly

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) failed to secure direct qualification for the knockout stages of the 2026 UEFA Champions League following a 1-1 draw with Newcastle. As a result, PSG will enter the playoffs, scheduled for February 2026, where they will face either Qarabag or AS Monaco. This outcome mirrors last season, where PSG also had to navigate the playoff route to advance.

Coach Luis Enrique expressed confidence in his squad's ability to succeed in the playoffs, recalling their prior experience overcoming challenges en route to a successful campaign last year. Enrique also highlighted that historically, 50% of the teams finishing in the top eight were eliminated in the Round of 16 last season, suggesting that direct qualification may not always confer a significant advantage. He further noted that the additional matches in the Coupe de France could be beneficial in maintaining team momentum.

This playoff involvement follows disappointing performances by other French teams, such as Olympique de Marseille being eliminated from the playoffs after a 3-0 loss to Club Bruges. Notably, Benfica’s goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin scored a pivotal goal that led to Marseille’s exit. Meanwhile, PSG slipped to 11th place in their league standings, underscoring the competitive challenges they face.

Despite the setback, PSG remains optimistic about their prospects in the playoffs as they prepare for the crucial matches ahead.
