Record Surge in Christmas Gift Resale Listings Across France in 2025

France witnessed an unprecedented spike in Christmas gift resale listings on December 25, 2025, with nearly 900,000 new postings recorded on popular second-hand platforms such as eBay and Rakuten. This figure dramatically outpaces the previous year's 340,000 listings, underscoring a deepening trend in post-holiday consumer behavior.

On Christmas Day alone, eBay reported 500,000 new listings and projected a further 400% surge in the following days. Meanwhile, Rakuten France observed 390,000 listings from private sellers by noon, marking a 2% increase over last year and anticipating that listings will exceed one million soon.

According to an eBay-Kantar survey, some 20 million French consumers engaged in gift reselling in 2025, an increase of 1.6 million individuals from the prior year. The items predominantly resold included cultural products like books and video games, high-tech electronics primarily smartphones, and toys. Sellers on average recovered close to 100 euros per item, with some surpassing 300 euros.

This surge highlights the growing normalization and economic impact of the resale market during the holiday season, reflecting shifts in consumer habits favoring sustainability and value recovery from unwanted gifts.
