Rémi Cavagna is focused on the French championships while weighing options for the 2025 Tour de France and Vuelta.

Key Points

  • • Cavagna is currently focused on the French elite championships.
  • • He expresses a preference for the Vuelta over the Tour de France.
  • • His selection for the Tour depends on team strategy and competition dynamics.
  • • Past performances may influence his selection decision.

Rémi Cavagna, the 29-year-old cyclist from Clermont, is currently eyeing his performance at the French elite championships as a precursor to his potential participation in the 2025 Tour de France or the Vuelta a España. Scheduled to compete in both the time trial and road race in Herbiers, Vendée, Cavagna is cautious about his chances of making it to the prestigious Tour, which kicks off on July 5 in Lille.

Cavagna, who previously rode in the Tour de France in 2020 and 2023, has expressed a preference for participating in the Vuelta a España, citing it as a race offering “more opportunities” compared to the Tour's challenging mountainous routes. "The Vuelta is more open for winning stages," Cavagna stated, recalling his victory in a stage during the 2019 edition.

The final selection for the Tour will be decided by the Groupama-FDJ team post-championships. Cavagna understands that his chances might be hampered by team strategies favoring climbers and sprinters, possibly sidelining him if the focus leans towards candidates such as David Gaudu or Guillaume Martin. Despite the uncertainty, he remains optimistic, believing that success at the championships could enhance his case for selection, especially given his past triumphs, including a national title in 2021. “If I do not get selected for the Tour, it won’t be a disaster,” he reflected, emphasizing his commitment to competing effectively in the French championships.
