Renault Unveils Major Engineering Overhaul with 800 Job Cuts in France

Renault has announced a significant transformation of its engineering division, which includes cutting 800 jobs in France as part of a global restructure to improve competitiveness against Chinese automakers. The announcement was made on June 24, 2026, during a meeting with unions where the automaker outlined a broader plan to reduce engineering roles worldwide by 15-20% over the next two years. Out of the 5,500 engineering positions in France, 800 will be eliminated. These cuts will be managed through voluntary departures, career adjustments, and collective contractual terminations, with no forced layoffs planned. Renault intends to redeploy 500 engineers internally and create 150 to 200 new permanent roles to support the transformation.

The company attributes the reductions to evolving needs such as integrating artificial intelligence, simplifying processes, and outsourcing certain functions, responding to economic and technological pressures. However, the plan has faced criticism from union representatives like Florent Grimaldi of CGT, who highlighted that the automotive industry has seen ongoing, massive job cuts in engineering for over twenty years, despite increasing workloads in research and development. Grimaldi views the electrification push as a pretext to intensify cost-cutting measures.
