This political unease is particularly evident in smaller communes where 68% had only one electoral list, frustrating voters and limiting choice. Nearly half of incumbent mayors have decided against seeking re-election, signaling discouragement fueled by rising incivilities and an inability to meet public demands, especially for security — a key voter concern traditionally managed by the state. The Oise prefecture approved funding for her security measures, allowing private security, and she now carries a pager linked to the local police. An investigation into threats against a public official has been launched by the Senlis prosecutor's office.

Analysts identify a structural failure to bridge national and local governance, with voters perceiving politicians as powerless to address core issues, particularly security and effective representation.

The second round of voting is scheduled for March 22 in select municipalities, but these developments have already cast a shadow over the electoral process and heightened calls for systemic political reform in France's municipal landscape.
