Russian Disinformation Campaign Targets French Political Figures Ahead of 2026 Presidential Election

A coordinated Russian disinformation operation has targeted prominent French political figures Raphaël Glucksmann and Léa Salamé, as well as journalist Edwy Plenel, in the run-up to the 2026 presidential election. The attack involved a fabricated website designed to closely mimic the left-leaning media outlet 'Blast,' from which a fully falsified video was deployed to damage the reputations of those targeted.

The misleading video montage circulated falsely accused Glucksmann, a Member of the European Parliament, and Salamé, a journalist and Glucksmann's partner, of accepting monetary support in exchange for media backing directed at a yet-to-be-declared presidential candidate. This fabricated narrative aimed to suggest unethical behaviour regarding media influence and political support, seeking to undermine public trust.

Raphaël Glucksmann publicly condemned the operation as a deliberate attempt at destabilization, highlighting the dangerous role disinformation plays in France’s political landscape. According to reports, the false media site and video were designed with meticulous attention to detail, including replicating the stylistic codes and web design of the well-known outlet Blast, thereby lending credibility to the fabricated accusations.

This incident amplifies growing concerns over foreign interference in French politics, particularly through disinformation campaigns exploiting digital platforms ahead of critical elections. The targeting of prominent figures like Glucksmann and Salamé points to an effort to sow discord and confusion among the electorate.
