Safran Invests Over €450 Million in New Carbon Brake Factory in Ain, France

Safran, the prominent French aerospace group, has announced a substantial investment exceeding 450 million euros to establish a new carbon brake manufacturing facility in the Ain region, situated close to Lyon. The new factory is expected to commence operations by 2030 and aims to cater specifically to the growing demands of the aerospace sector.

A critical factor in Safran's decision was the need for reliable access to decarbonized electricity at stable and competitive prices, as energy expenditures typically account for around 30% of carbon brake production costs. Although Safran originally considered North America for the project due to competitive energy costs, the company opted for the Ain region after determining that areas governed by ecologist majorities, such as Lyon, posed barriers to investment. Lyon’s metropolitan area, including potential sites in Feyzin and the Vallée de la Chimie, was initially on the table, but concerns about local government policies influenced the final location choice.

Additionally, the new facility is expected to leverage synergies with Safran's existing site in Villeurbanne and the aeronautics campus located in Ambérieu-en-Bugey, enhancing operational efficiency. Safran's strategic investment marks a significant development in the region's industrial landscape and underscores the company's commitment to advancing its manufacturing capabilities in decarbonized technologies.
