Ségolène Royal Secures Transfer of Journalist Christophe Gleizes to Algiers Amid Franco-Algerian Tensions

Former French minister and current president of the France-Algeria Association, Ségolène Royal, has successfully mediated the transfer of journalist Christophe Gleizes from a prison in Tizi-Ouzou to a facility closer to Algiers. Gleizes, who is serving a seven-year sentence for "apology of terrorism," was moved to facilitate family visits, a step Royal announced during her visit to Algeria.

Royal's mission, described as a humanitarian gesture rather than an official state action, comes amid strained diplomatic relations between France and Algeria, which include the unprecedented absence of ambassadors and the imprisonment of a French consular agent in Algeria.

During her visit, Royal met with Gleizes, who she described as serene and optimistic despite his circumstances, noting his extensive reading about Algeria while in detention since June. She emphasized the importance of familial support and mentioned that Gleizes had received few visitors aside from family and the Cardinal of Algiers.

Royal also conveyed her support for the journalist's pardon request during talks with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, underscoring her commitment to reconciliation and respect between the two nations. She highlighted the necessity for renewed cooperation, particularly in areas such as counterterrorism and economic ties, warning that without progress, France risks losing influence to global competitors like China and Russia.
