Severe Flooding and Lightning Strike Impact Southern France Amid Intense Mediterranean Storms

Southern France is grappling with severe flooding as an intense Mediterranean storm episode continues to impact the Gard and Hérault regions. On September 30, rainfall peaked at 337.6 mm in Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort and reached over 299 mm in Colognac, prompting red alerts for rain and floods. Floodwaters have submerged roads and bridges, particularly around Sauve, Quissac, and Laroque, causing major traffic disruptions and leading to school closures and travel restrictions.

Authorities are closely monitoring the Lez River near Montpellier, which has reached critical levels, raising concerns about urban flooding. Residents have been urged to avoid low-lying areas and underground parking. The storm has also produced intense electrical activity, with over 10,000 lightning strikes recorded. Tragically, a 16-year-old girl was slightly injured by lightning in Saint-Aunès.

Researcher Philippe Drobinski highlighted the growing frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events, linking them to climate change. He emphasized the rapid onset of flash floods typical in Mediterranean episodes, stating "all overflows very quickly," underscoring the urgent challenges climate change poses to the region's weather patterns.

As the storm system moves eastward, forecasts warn of continued heavy rain in the lower Rhône valley. The ongoing emergency continues to strain local resources and authorities.
