Sexual Assault Investigations Unfold in French Educational Institutions in Paris and Rouen

Legal proceedings have been initiated concerning sexual assault allegations involving minors at educational institutions in France, spotlighting cases in Paris and Rouen. On May 22, 2026, two animators at Saint-Dominique school in Paris were placed in provisional detention and charged with serious sexual offenses, including rape and assaults on minors under 15. The suspects, aged 52 and 44 from Brazil and Cameroon respectively, face multiple accusations arising from reports by several children. The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed they are being prosecuted for sexual offenses, with thirteen other individuals initially detained but subsequently released. A female animator has also been designated as a witness. Lawyers for the Brazilian suspect called for caution against media sensationalism, stressing confidence in the judicial process to establish their client's innocence.

Meanwhile, an investigation was also opened concerning allegations of sexual violence in a nursery in Rouen. This inquiry involves a man and a woman following reports filed by the city for sexual assault on minors. While the city reported two complaints, the prosecutor confirmed one is currently recognized. Both implicated staff members have been suspended pending investigation outcomes. Additionally, a third complaint was filed against an extracurricular worker at a Rouen preschool, who has also been suspended.

These cases are part of a wider disturbing trend in French educational environments. Since early 2026, 78 staff members in Parisian schools have been suspended related to various concerns, including 31 suspensions specifically for sexual violence allegations. The incidents have alarmed parents and provoked political controversy, emphasizing ongoing concerns about protecting children within educational institutions.
