Shein Expands Retail Presence in Five French Provincial Cities Ahead of 2026 Municipal Elections

Shein, the Asian fast fashion giant, is extending its footprint in France by inaugurating stores in five provincial BHV department stores across Limoges, Angers, Dijon, Grenoble, and Reims on February 25. This move follows the brand's controversial debut in Paris at BHV Marais on November 5 last year. Originally scheduled for October, these store openings were postponed to foster a more favorable environment amid ongoing political sensitivities.

Each new outlet will span between 500 and 1000 square meters, catering to what BHV owner SGM's director, Frédéric Merlin, describes as "strong customer demand." Merlin anticipates that Shein's arrival will boost foot traffic in city centers, asserting that it "should not become a contentious issue" in the upcoming municipal elections scheduled for 2026.

The timing of these launches illustrates a strategic effort to capitalize on local consumer expectations despite earlier controversies surrounding Shein's presence in the capital. This expansion highlights the intersection of retail business initiatives and the socio-political climate in France’s municipalities during an election year.
