The fast fashion giant Shein faces serious legal scrutiny in France after the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) reported the company for selling "sex dolls with a childlike appearance" on its website. The DGCCRF raised alarm that the online descriptions of these dolls bordered on child pornography, which is illegal under French law and subject to severe penalties, including up to seven years in prison and fines of €100,000. Shein promptly removed the dolls from its platform and is investigating how these products evaded its internal controls, also reviewing third-party vendor listings for similar offending items.

The DGCCRF has escalated the case to French prosecutors and Arcom, the country's media regulator. This comes days before Shein plans to inaugurate its first physical store in Paris at the historic BHV Marais department store, a move already controversial due to the firm's criticized labor and environmental practices. Shein stated its zero-tolerance stance against unlawful content and is implementing corrective measures to prevent recurrence. The company is no stranger to legal challenges in France, recently contesting a record €150 million fine for alleged data privacy breaches, which it claims is politically motivated. This emerging scandal further complicates Shein’s position amid growing regulatory and public scrutiny in France.
