Silver Economy in Alpes-Maritimes: Turning Aging Challenges into Opportunities

The Alpes-Maritimes region is leveraging the silver economy—economic activities catering to the aging population—as a strategic growth driver, highlighted during a recent roundtable at the Nice-Matin Eco Club held on September 15 at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes. With France harboring 22 million people aged over 55, and a demographic trend indicating more seniors than youth since 2010 in Alpes-Maritimes, stakeholders emphasized opportunities spanning healthcare, construction, tourism, and mobility sectors.

There are currently 104,000 jobs in the region dedicated to addressing aging-related needs. A significant concern discussed was housing, where 70% of residences in Nice are too small to accommodate necessary health equipment, prompting initiatives for new housing solutions aimed at enhancing autonomy and mitigating senior isolation.

Experts like Philippe Dedrie of SunWaves MedTech and Pierre Canivet of Pass-Memo underscored the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in monitoring seniors' health and enabling early interventions. They advocated for a collaborative public-private approach to tackle these demographic challenges effectively.

This shift towards embracing the silver economy not only aims to meet seniors’ needs but also to catalyze economic innovation and job creation within the Alpes-Maritimes. The discussion reframed aging from a societal challenge into a source of sustainable economic opportunity.
