Sophia Chikirou, of La France insoumise and regional councilor, has announced her candidacy for mayor of Paris in the 2025 municipal elections. In an interview, she criticized the incumbent socialist administration under Anne Hidalgo, which has governed since 2014, stating, "We have never had as many problems" and expressing skepticism about the socialists’ ability to lead effectively. Chikirou called for a genuine renewal in leftist leadership, emphasizing the need to modernize Paris and pledging not to align with socialists to defeat right-wing candidate Rachida Dati. She argued that Parisians have seen little improvement under the long-standing socialist control and suggested that a socialist mayor should not continue in office.

Chikirou’s candidacy highlights growing divisions within the left ahead of the crucial municipal elections, with her refusal to unite with socialists marking a significant political stance. Meanwhile, right-wing alliances are also shaping the electoral landscape outside Paris, as seen in Béziers where Robert Ménard, running for a third term, enjoys support from the Republicans. Ménard champions an "union of the rights" and works across party lines, despite uncertainty about the far-right National Rally’s intentions.
