Strict Firework Restrictions in France Amid High Wildfire Risk for July 14 Celebrations

As France approaches its July 14 national celebrations, local authorities are implementing strict measures to prevent wildfires linked to fireworks amid dry, windy conditions. In the Manche department, an orange alert for forest fires was declared for July 10 and 11 due to east winds of 40 to 50 km/h that dry out vegetation, raising fire risks especially in the southern half. The Departmental Fire and Rescue Service has responded to around 20 natural area fires since July 6. The prefecture urges residents to act responsibly, noting that 90% of forest fires in France are human-caused, mostly through carelessness.

Consequently, the purchase, transport, and use of fireworks by individuals are banned until July 15 at 8:00 AM. Access bans to forest areas are in effect, open flames and barbecues near sensitive vegetation are prohibited, and restrictions on agricultural and forestry work have been imposed, including a ban on forestry fires and limitations on agricultural work during peak afternoon hours.

Similarly, in the Landes department, Prefect Gilles Clavreul issued a decree banning all fireworks displays until the fire vigilance level returns to yellow. Exceptions exist only for public pyrotechnic shows that adhere to strict conditions such as firing over water or from beaches outside high-risk zones, maintaining safe distances, and clearing dry vegetation beforehand. Law enforcement and mayors are tasked with enforcing these rules, with penalties for violations. The prefect stressed the importance of responsible behavior to avoid additional strain on emergency services already mobilized due to the ongoing heatwave.
