The summer clearance sale organized by Action économique et citoyenne (AEC) breathed new life into Marigot’s downtown retail area on August 7-8. The event featured shop discounts alongside a pedestrianized General de Gaulle street hosting 90 vendor spots offering a wide array of products—from clothing and shoes to food and jewelry—at reduced prices.

Attendance surged after 10:30 AM, attracting both locals and tourists in search of bargains. Yann Le Cam, president of AEC and representative of Marigot’s merchants and restaurateurs, highlighted that beyond boosting sales, the event was vital for creating a lively ambiance and increasing visibility in the central district. He noted that the clearance sale helps businesses clear inventory and improves cash flow amid a tougher economic climate where average monthly customer spending has fallen sharply from €150 to €50.

Marigot retailers rely heavily on tourism, with nearly 70% of revenue generated during the six-month tourist season. After a successful tourist influx, merchants are optimistic the momentum from such promotional events can sustain retail activity despite an overall slowdown seen since June.

This positive local development contrasts with the broader French economic outlook where, despite modest gains in industry and services sectors, activity in the construction sector remains weak and private sector growth contracted in August. Marigot’s retail resurgence through targeted promotions exemplifies grassroots efforts to counterbalance wider economic headwinds.
