Suspected Domestic Violence Femicides Highlight Rising Concern in France

In recent days, France has witnessed troubling developments in suspected domestic violence-related femicides, underscoring a persistent social issue. In Haguenau, Bas-Rhin, a 60-year-old man is under investigation after his wife was found dead at the foot of a building. Initially claiming his wife had committed suicide by jumping out of a window, inconsistencies emerged during police inquiries and a neighborhood investigation that noted prior arguments between the couple. Consequently, the husband was taken into custody and is scheduled for a psychiatric evaluation. Authorities are increasingly concerned amid an 11% rise in domestic femicides from 2023 to 2024, with 107 women reportedly killed by current or former partners during this period.

Although a separate fatal stabbing occurred in Saint-Lô involving two men, this incident appears unrelated to domestic violence or femicide. The suspect, charged after admitting responsibility, had a high blood alcohol level when arrested.
