Texas Poised to Surpass France as World's 7th Largest Economy by 2025

Texas is on track to surpass France's GDP by 2025, signaling a major shift in global economic rankings. In 2024, Texas's nominal GDP was estimated at $2.77 trillion, while France's stood at $3.16 trillion. To overtake France, Texas needs to achieve an approximate 14% growth rate in 2025, a challenging but not impossible target given its current trajectory and economic drivers.

Governor Greg Abbott has confidently predicted Texas will become the seventh-largest economy globally. The state's economic strength is bolstered by its high GDP per capita of $88,000, nearly double France's $46,000. Texas leads the U.S. in energy production, generating 43% of the country's oil and 28% of its natural gas, and is also the top U.S. producer of wind energy, reflecting a diversified energy sector.

Texas's business-friendly environment—with no state income tax and low regulation—has attracted numerous tech giants like Apple, Google, Tesla, and Oracle, particularly from California's Silicon Valley. This influx has turned Texas into a burgeoning tech hub dubbed "Silicon Hills," resulting in 314 corporate headquarters relocating there in the past decade. The state also experienced significant population growth in 2024, with over 560,000 new residents, further fueling economic expansion.

Despite these optimistic prospects, some analysts caution that achieving the necessary growth to eclipse France remains a steep challenge, as France itself is growing steadily at 0.9% projected for 2025. Nevertheless, Texas’s rapid job creation—168,000 new jobs added from September 2024 to 2025—underscores its robust economic momentum.
