Tornado Devastates Pomas, Aude: Dozens Injured and Widespread Damage on August 24, 2026

A powerful tornado struck the village of Pomas in the Aude department on August 24, 2026, causing significant destruction and injuring dozens of residents. The tornado hit around 5:20 PM in this small community of about 1,000 people, tearing roofs off homes and leveling some structures entirely.

According to reports, 41 people were injured in the incident, including a pregnant woman whose house collapsed. She was reportedly protected by her couch during the event and was hospitalized; however, the health condition of her unborn child remains unclear. While many were hurt, emergency responders confirmed that no one was missing amid the chaos.

Emergency services responded swiftly, with over 115 firefighters, including 14 urban search and rescue specialists, deploying to Pomas. Canine units assisted in the search efforts while the gendarmes secured the area to prevent looting in the heavily damaged homes. Additionally, more than 100 firefighters were mobilized, with reinforcements expected to arrive, as two emergency shelters were established—one in Pomas and another nearby in Limoux—to accommodate displaced residents.

The tornado also caused widespread disruption to utilities, leaving approximately 2,800 households without electricity due to downed trees and infrastructure damage across several surrounding communes. Prior to the storm, Météo France had issued an orange alert for thunderstorms and severe weather in the region, which was lifted by 7 PM. The weather agency recorded over 30 millimeters of rain in one hour in nearby Castelnaudary and wind gusts reaching 117 km/h in Arquettes-en-Val.

In a broader regional impact, the third stage of the Tour of Spain cycling race was cancelled due to hailstorms stemming from the same severe weather system, forcing competitors to take shelter.

While tornadoes are relatively common in France, occurring dozens of times each year, Météo France noted that the influence of climate change on their frequency and intensity is still uncertain. The community of Pomas now faces a challenging recovery as officials and residents come to terms with the extensive damage caused by this unexpected and violent event.
