Tour de France 2026 Stage 15 Shaken by Key Abandonments and Evenepoel's Victory

The 15th stage of the 2026 Tour de France, held on July 19 from Champagnole to Solaison, was marked by significant upheavals with major rider abandonments and a notable stage win that reshaped the general classification. Jonas Vingegaard, a top favorite and previous two-time winner of the Tour, crashed heavily roughly 20 kilometers from the finish, fracturing his right clavicle. This severe injury forced his first-ever premature withdrawal from the Tour, requiring surgical treatment and ending his 2026 race campaign prematurely.

In addition to Vingegaard's exit, Tim Merlier, a three-time stage winner and the world's leading sprinter, also abandoned the race after struggling on the mountain ascent during this grueling stage. Despite support from teammate Pascal Eenkhoorn, Merlier could not reach the finish line. The stage also saw the departure of fellow Belgian Tom Van Asbroeck.

The stage victory went to Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, who sprinted to a win ahead of Tadej Pogačar and Isaac Del Toro. This victory propelled Evenepoel to second place in the general classification, now trailing the yellow jersey leader by five minutes. Meanwhile, Isaac Del Toro claimed the white jersey for the best young rider, overtaking Paul Seixas, who dropped from the top spot and holds fourth place overall.

Mads Pedersen continues to lead the points classification with 397 points, while Merlier, before abandoning, was fourth with 307 points.

The stage was also notable for an unusual early morning doping control that Vingegaard and Pogačar underwent at 2 AM and 5 AM respectively, highlighting the strict regulatory environment of the race.

Following this eventful and physically demanding stage, the peloton will observe a rest day before embarking on the final week's mountainous challenges in the Alps, culminating in the traditional finish in Paris on July 26.
