Tour de France Kicks Off in July with New Teams, While Flag Football Debuts in France

The 2026 sports calendar in France is heating up with major events including the Tour de France, starting on July 4 in Barcelona, and the inaugural Coupe de France de flag football on February 1 at Montbazin stadium.

For the Tour de France, the organizers have invited the French team TotalEnergies, making their 26th consecutive appearance, and the Spanish team Caja Rural - Seguros RGA, debuting in this prestigious race. TotalEnergies aims to capture its 12th stage victory despite facing uncertainty as their sponsor plans to withdraw at the end of the season. Caja Rural, featuring Spanish, French, and Colombian cyclists, sets a goal to win a stage in its first Tour. Out of 23 teams, 18 qualified from the World Tour, with three ProTeams also included. However, the Franco-Dutch team Unibet - Rose Rockets was not invited despite notable signings.

Meanwhile, the Coupe de France de flag football, a dynamic non-contact sport promoting safety and inclusivity, will showcase 20 regional teams competing in two 20-minute halves. The sport, played in mixed teams, emphasizes speed and teamwork and is scheduled to become part of the 2028 Olympics. Since 2022, the Montbazin association has cultivated senior mixed and youth teams, growing interest in this emerging discipline.

Adding to the sporting excitement, the city of Dole is preparing for the Tour de France stage passing through on July 17, alongside other events like the French Youth Motocross Championship and the World VTT Trial Championship. The local sports office is also promoting the Pass’Eldo program to engage youth in various sports during summer.

This year promises a vibrant showcase of French and international sporting talent, blending historic cycling tradition with innovative new sports like flag football.
