Vincent Bouget Unveils Inclusive Economic Development Strategy for Nîmes

Vincent Bouget, newly elected communist mayor of Nîmes in 2026, has embarked on a transformative economic strategy that emphasizes social and solidarity economy to address the city's pressing challenges. His election marked a significant political shift as Nîmes became the most populous French city led by a communist mayor, following the decline of right-wing cohesion after Jean-Paul Fournier’s 25-year leadership. Bouget successfully unified left-wing factions, excluding La France Insoumise, with notable support from Benoît Hamon during the campaign.

Facing a city where one in five residents lives below the poverty line, a heavily indebted municipal administration, and underperforming school infrastructure, Bouget’s administration is taking a cautious but determined approach to governance. Central to his vision is the establishment of an economic development framework that integrates social economy principles. Ahead of this, Bouget announced plans to create an 'École de la Coopération-Charles Gide,' aimed at fostering cooperative and solidarity-based economic initiatives.

In an interview with Les Échos, Bouget outlined that the new economic growth strategy would not simply focus on traditional metrics but would actively incorporate social and solidarity economy projects to create inclusive opportunities for Nîmes’ residents.
