Violence Erupts Before 2026 Coupe de France Final as Minister Pledges Firm Action

On the eve of the 2026 Coupe de France final between OGC Nice and RC Lens, violent clashes involving OGC Nice supporters broke out in Paris, casting a shadow over the high-profile football event. Around 100 Nice supporters gathered near the Canal Saint-Martin in the 10th arrondissement late Thursday night, apparently seeking confrontation with former Paris Saint-Germain supporters. This escalation led to a significant brawl, during which weapons such as knives, masks, and gloves were seized by authorities.

The unrest resulted in six injuries, one of which was serious, and the arrest of 65 individuals primarily linked to the violence. Officials described the altercation as a disgrace to football and supporter culture, especially considering the Coupe de France is meant to embody unity and joy among fans. The final has been classified as a high-risk match due to ongoing tensions between the two clubs’ supporters, with similar incidents having occurred during league matches in 2023 and 2024.

French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari expressed her outrage on social media, stating, “I am scandalized by the violence of the events that took place last night involving Nice supporters before the Coupe de France. It is a shame for the image of football and fandom, at a time when this competition, which brings together so many French people, should be a moment of joy and cohesion, just weeks before the World Cup.” She promised that firm measures would be taken to hold the offenders accountable.

Additionally, Nice's mayor Eric Ciotti condemned the incidents and called for stringent actions. The violence reflects ongoing challenges in managing ultra fan groups and maintaining safety at major sporting events. The authorities have bolstered security measures for the final, scheduled to kick off at 21:00 at the Stade de France.
