Wildfire Near Bellegarde-en-Diois Stabilized Amid Heightened Risk Measures in Vendée

A significant wildfire near Bellegarde-en-Diois in the Drôme department has been brought under control, though vigilance remains high on two critical sectors. The fire, which consumed over 300 hectares of forest, prompted the mobilization of 350 firefighters who worked diligently to stabilize the situation. Despite their efforts, seven firefighters sustained minor injuries in the course of the operation.

In response to increasing wildfire risks exacerbated by current weather and vegetation conditions, the prefect of Vendée has raised the regional alert to an "elevated" risk level. Effective August 8, 2026, this has led to several temporary prohibitions designed to protect the region from forest fires. These restrictions include a ban on fireworks and pyrotechnic activities, and limiting public access to woods and forests between 12:00 PM and midnight.

Furthermore, motorized access to forested areas is restricted, and professionals engaged in forestry and agricultural work must adhere to strict conditions. Other activities that may ignite fires are suspended. Notably, the permanent prohibition of fire usage in forested areas—covering smoking, barbecues, and waste burning—is enforced annually from March 1 through September 30. However, these restrictions exclude urban and coastal forests, which follow separate regulations.

Authorities emphasize a sustained vigilance stance despite the wildfire's containment, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the fire's sectors and the continuing threat posed by dry conditions.
