Woman Found Dead in Lille; Partner Held in Custody Amid Femicide Investigation

A tragic femicide investigation is underway in Lille after the body of a 34-year-old Belgian woman was found with visible signs of violence. The discovery occurred on December 25 in a well-known Lille neighborhood, where the victim's 36-year-old partner was promptly taken into police custody. According to police sources, the victim had bruises on her body, and the apartment showed evidence of a violent event.

The suspect, an Algerian man legally residing in France and with a prior criminal record related to traffic offenses, called emergency services and claimed the violence erupted following an evening of heavy drinking. The Lille prosecutor's office has not yet made a public statement regarding the case.

Data published in November 2024 by the interministerial mission for the protection of women revealed that more than three women are victims of femicide or attempted femicide every day nationwide, with these numbers rising over the past year.
