2026 French Municipal Elections See Varied Voter Turnout Across Regions

The 2026 municipal elections in France, held on March 15 and 22, have witnessed differing voter participation rates across various departments, reflecting regional engagement trends. Nationally, the first round saw a participation rate of 54.54%, an increase from 44.92% in 2020 but still below the 64.46% recorded in 2014. The Eure department reported a turnout of 46.80% by 5 PM in the second round, up from 33% in the previous cycle at the same time. Corse-du-Sud reported the highest engagement with a 68.20% participation rate in the second round, closely following its 69.40% turnout in the first round. The election process incorporated key reforms, such as the abolition of panachage in communes under 1,000 inhabitants to enhance municipal stability and reinforce gender parity. An online proxy voting system was also promoted to facilitate participation. Nine communes including Bernay, Évreux, and Louviers proceeded to the second round, with 25 candidate lists registered for that stage.
