Alarming Rise in Parent-Teacher Conflicts Threatens French Public Education

Following the start of the school year, France faces a growing crisis in parent-teacher relationships, with escalating conflicts and threats against educators posing a significant challenge to the public education system. Georges Fotinos, a researcher and former education inspector, revealed that 80% of school directors reported conflicts with parents at least once annually in 2025, a sharp rise from 56% in 2013. The prevalence of threats and insults directed at teachers has also surged, with the percentage of directors who reported no threats dropping from 73% in 2013 to just 39% in 2025.

Recent incidents include cases of parents threatening teachers, with one parent receiving a six-month prison sentence for death threats. Fotinos criticized political authorities for neglecting this critical issue, stating, “The political sphere has too long set aside the challenge of school-parent relationships.” The increase in hostility towards educators is now viewed as a mounting danger for the integrity and future of France’s public education.

This deterioration reflects broader societal tensions impacting schools as vital community institutions.
