Anne Hidalgo Endorses Emmanuel Grégoire for 2026 Paris Municipal Elections, Rules Out Alliance with La France Insoumise

Outgoing Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has publicly declared her support for Emmanuel Grégoire, the candidate leading the united left list for the upcoming March 2026 municipal elections. In an interview with Les Echos, Hidalgo stated, "I have always said I would vote for the left and the one leading the list is Emmanuel Grégoire," reaffirming her political backing despite their previously strained relationship. She stressed her opposition to any alliance with Jean-Luc Mélenchon's La France Insoumise (LFI), describing it as a "dead end for the left." This endorsement comes after months of silence and followed a contentious PS primary last June, which Grégoire won despite Hidalgo's earlier refusal to back him if he secured the party's nomination.

Hidalgo also voiced concerns about Rachida Dati, the Les Républicains candidate, warning that Dati's potential alliances with far-right elements pose risks for Paris. Dati is currently facing trial for corruption and influence peddling. Meanwhile, Hidalgo herself has faced scrutiny over a contentious 2023 trip to Tahiti but affirmed her commitment to serving as mayor until the end of her term.

This development adds clarity to the left's position in the election, highlighting internal divisions and strategic decisions ahead of the polls scheduled for March 15 and 22, 2026. Hidalgo's cautious yet firm support for Grégoire aims to consolidate left-wing votes while distancing from both far-left and far-right influences.
