The Ariège region in France is making significant strides in securing the future of its mountain ski resorts through unanimous community approval for the recapitalization of Savasem, the public entity managing local ski stations. This move was described as a decisive step toward economic vitality by local advisors, reflecting a concerted effort to sustain and develop the mountain economy.
The initiative comes after the creation of the Syndicat des montagnes de l’Ariège (SMA) in September 2025, which aims to coordinate the development and operation of the mountain areas. In March 2026, Savasem received an eight-station public service delegation, setting the stage for a planned 15-year human and economic transition to maintain the direct and indirect economic contributions of the ski valleys.
A key focus of the recapitalization is financing the replacement of the Bonascre – Le Saquet gondola, critical infrastructure for the region’s ski tourism. The intercommunal authority emphasized that this financial reinforcement aligns with broader territorial projects under SMA's leadership and supports improvements in economic development, mobility, housing policy, and local finances.
This decisive council session highlights the local commitment to securing sustainable growth, economic resilience, and enhanced user experiences for residents and visitors alike. The recapitalization not only ensures the ski resorts’ operational future but also reinforces the economic fabric of the Ariège mountain communities.
