AS Monaco Basketball Excluded from Next Season Due to Financial Instability

AS Monaco, the reigning French basketball champions and European vice-champions of 2025, have been denied entry to the upcoming professional season by the Ligue nationale de basket's (LNB) financial watchdog. On July 3, the LNB announced that Monaco failed to provide sufficient guarantees regarding its economic viability and the status of its recovery plans, leading to this unprecedented exclusion.

The club, owned by businessman Aleksej Fedoricsev, has been grappling with severe financial difficulties, including debts it faces unlikely to be repaid. A recent judicial review revealed that Monaco had been relying on state support and a loan from its national financing company to remain solvent.

Monaco's general director, Oleksiy Yefimov, is actively seeking investors to address these financial challenges ahead of a critical court hearing scheduled for July 10. This hearing may influence the club's ability to present a viable recovery strategy. Monaco retains the option to appeal the LNB's decision to the appeals commission of the French basketball federation.

This financial crisis comes at a tumultuous time for the club, which had ambitions to stay in the prestigious Euroligue but faced demotion to the Eurocoupe amid these struggles. The Monégasque government had committed to support the club throughout the championship season, but court representatives have voiced concerns about the club’s insolvency risks as early as July 1.

The exclusion of the current French champions marks a significant development in French basketball, highlighting the critical importance of financial stability for professional sports clubs.
