On June 6, 2025, France implemented a new channel numbering system across its TNT (Télévision Numérique Terrestre), impacting audience ratings for continuous news channels. Following this transition, CNews emerged as the frontrunner with a 4.2% share of the audience aged 4 and older, a significant rise from 3.4% in May 2025. BFMTV, the previous leader, fell to second place with a 2.6% share, marking a decline from its May share of 2.9%. Meanwhile, LCI improved its position with a 2% audience share, up from 1.8%, and France Info gained a share of 1.1%, an increase from 0.8%.
Despite the new numbering aimed at enhancing pluralism by clustering news channels together, initial observations indicate that viewer habits remain stable and largely unaffected. On June 7, a typical weekend dip was noted, with CNews still leading at 3% share, followed by BFMTV at 2.5%, LCI at 1.7%, and France Info at 0.9%. Journalist Clément Garin highlighted that CNews is closing the viewership gap with BFMTV, particularly within the 25-49 age demographic, standing only 0.1% apart on June 7. While it is still early to draw definitive conclusions, the early results suggest that overall, the transition to the new channel numbering has not significantly altered viewer behavior in the immediate term.
