Cost Comparison of Travel Modes in France: Train vs. Air vs. Car
UFC-Que Choisir's report reveals trains are often cheaper and more eco-friendly than flights in France.
Key Points
- • 60% of summer train journeys are cheaper than flights, especially from Paris.
- • Air travel is more economical for cross-province routes requiring changes.
- • Car travel is cost-effective for families in one-third of journeys.
- • Report recommends boosting train services and increasing flight bans where rail alternatives exist.
A recent report by UFC-Que Choisir highlights that train travel in France is often the most cost-effective option compared to flying, particularly for popular direct routes. The study, published on July 3, 2025, revealed that for approximately 60% of summer train journeys, costs are lower than airfare, especially those stemming from Paris. Average prices indicated that train fares can be about half the cost of flying on these direct routes.
On the other hand, for cross-province travel that necessitates train changes, air travel can prove more economical—by about 37% on average. Car travel stands out as a favorable alternative for families, with one-third of their journeys being cheaper than both train and air options.
To further enhance the efficiency and attractiveness of train services, the report advises on improving rail infrastructure, raising the threshold for banning domestic flights where a viable train alternative exists from 2.5 to 4 hours, and offering discounted family fares.
In addition to cost factors, the environmental impact of travel modes was examined. Train journeys emit significantly less CO2, with records showing only 2.9 grams per passenger-kilometer, compared to 331 grams for short flights and up to 256 grams for solo car trips. The findings underscore a need for travel policies that favor sustainable options, positioning rail as a champion of eco-friendly travel in France.
