Eurostar Resumes Services After Power Outage in Channel Tunnel, Delays and Cancellations Persist

Eurostar resumed train services on December 31 after a power failure disrupted travel through the Channel Tunnel, but passengers face possible delays and cancellations.

    Key details

  • • Eurostar resumed services after electrical power issues caused shutdown and cancellations on December 30.
  • • A dual failure involving an electrical outage and shuttle breakdown led to the disruption.
  • • Passengers were warned of potential delays and last-minute cancellations despite service resumption.
  • • Eurostar transported a record 19.5 million passengers in 2024, with new competitors seeking market entry.

On December 31, 2025, Eurostar announced the resumption of its train services between London and the continent following a major technical disruption the previous day. The disruption was caused by a double incident involving an electrical power failure in the Channel Tunnel and a breakdown of the LeShuttle service that transports vehicles between France and the UK. Although the tunnel operator Getlink confirmed no trains were trapped under the sea, the incident led to the suspension of all Eurostar trains connecting Paris, London, Amsterdam, and Brussels on December 30.

Eurostar warned passengers of ongoing risks of delays and last-minute cancellations even as services gradually resumed. The company offered affected customers the option to exchange tickets for free or receive refunds or vouchers. Due to rescheduling, trains are currently fully booked.

Communication management during the crisis drew criticism. Crisis expert Florian Silnicki noted the operators failed to provide clear and centralized information early on, resulting in passengers learning about the incident through social media rather than official channels.

Eurostar remains the sole passenger operator in the Channel Tunnel and transported a record 19.5 million passengers in 2024, up by 850,000 from the previous year. However, challenges loom as competitors explore entering the market, notably the British group Virgin, which secured access to the London Temple Mills depot essential for new routes.

Despite the technical setback, Eurostar aims to maintain all its services this busy New Year's travel period, with repair work and additional shuttles being deployed to restore full operations.
