France Announces 'France Libre' as New Nuclear-Powered Aircraft Carrier to Enter Service in 2038

French President Emmanuel Macron has officially announced the name of France's next-generation aircraft carrier, 'France Libre', set to replace the Charles de Gaulle by 2038. This state-of-the-art carrier marks a major milestone in French naval capabilities and defense technology, with an estimated cost of around €10 billion over the next 20 years.

The 'France Libre' will be the largest military ship ever built in France, weighing approximately 77,000 to 80,000 tons and stretching 310 meters in length. It is designed to carry a crew of 2,000 sailors and accommodate up to 30 to 40 combat aircraft including Rafale jets and next-generation fighters, as well as drones and helicopters. The ship will feature nuclear propulsion via two reactors, granting exceptional autonomy and enabling it to operate without refueling for extended periods.

In a significant technological advancement for the French Navy, the carrier will utilize three electromagnetic aircraft launch systems (EMALS) supplied by General Atomics, replacing the traditional steam catapults currently used aboard the Charles de Gaulle. This modern system promises more efficient and versatile aircraft operations.

Announced during Macron's visit to the Naval Group facility in Indret, near Nantes, the name 'France Libre' honors the spirit of French resistance and General de Gaulle's legacy. The program draws on the expertise of around 800 primarily French companies, with over 90% of procurement sourced nationally. It is expected to generate up to 14,000 jobs at peak production and encompass more than 200 different trades.

Besides its technological sophistication, the aircraft carrier represents a strategic asset for France’s ability to project power globally and maintain military independence amidst evolving geopolitical tensions. While some express concerns about the integration of American technology in critical systems like the EMALS, the general consensus emphasizes the carrier's vital role for France's national defense and deterrence posture going forward.

Construction work has commenced in Cherbourg, following design work that began in 2018. The 'France Libre' anticipates an operational lifespan of around 45 years, ensuring continuity and modernization in French naval aviation capabilities for decades.
