France Bolsters Military Presence in Gulf Following Iranian Drone Attacks

In response to escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly after Iranian drone strikes targeting Gulf countries, France is significantly increasing its military defensive posture in the region. French President Emmanuel Macron announced this move on March 1, 2026, following an attack on a French naval base in Abu Dhabi by two Iranian drones. Though the strikes caused material damage, no French casualties were reported.

Macron convened a Defense Council on February 28, reflecting the gravity of the situation after Iran's strikes following an Israeli-American offensive against Iran. These developments came shortly after the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, an event that France publicly acknowledged with satisfaction.

France maintains around 5,000 troops in the Gulf and other Middle Eastern countries, including the UAE, Djibouti, and Iraq. The French government, asserting a commitment to adapting to the shifting security landscape, will bolster its military resources in the Gulf to protect French nationals and bases. Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon emphasized that France is actively preparing for the potential evacuation of its citizens from the region as soon as airspace conditions allow.

French authorities also reaffirmed their readiness to engage in defensive operations alongside allies such as the UK and Germany, aiming to counter Iranian missile and drone threats proportionally. Macron stressed that France will not overlook these provocations and is reinforcing its support for allied nations under defense treaties.
