France has firmly reiterated its demand for the immediate release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and Jihad Islamic in its recent address at the United Nations Security Council. Jay Dharmadhikari, France’s Deputy Permanent Representative, condemned the inhumane treatment of these hostages, some of whom have been held for over 660 days, and extended solidarity to their families.
In his speech, Dharmadhikari categorized the actions of Hamas as brutal and outlined the French government's support for the Israeli people while simultaneously highlighting the urgent humanitarian crisis facing Gaza. France is advocating for an immediate ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access to the region, where aid has been severely limited due to ongoing conflict.
Although France has initiated emergency measures, such as air-dropping non-perishable goods into Gaza, Dharmadhikari emphasized that these actions are insufficient without comprehensive ground access for humanitarian aid. The situation in Gaza is dire, and France is pressing for solutions that ensure both immediate humanitarian relief and long-term peace.
France envisions a political resolution based on a two-state solution, which includes recognizing a sovereign Palestinian state and the complete demilitarization of Hamas. This is seen as essential for establishing lasting peace and security in the region. Furthermore, Dharmadhikari noted a significant step toward regional integration, referencing recent condemnations of Hamas by Arab nations at a conference in New York. He underscored that a fair resolution to these tensions is critical for achieving justice, security, and dignity for all peoples involved in the Middle Eastern conflict.
