France Faces Worsening Drought with 70% Under Water Restrictions and 40,000 at Risk of Potable Water Shortage

A severe drought exacerbated by a new heatwave is currently sweeping across France in August 2026, prompting emergency water conservation measures and widespread water usage restrictions affecting 70% of the country. According to France 24, up to 40,000 people face the risk of running out of potable water, with some municipalities already relying on tanker trucks and bottled water donations to meet demand.

In the Alpes-Maritimes region, the situation is particularly critical. The prefect, Jean-Marie Girier, announced on August 13 the imposition of restrictions across 100 communes, with 49 under alert and 46 under heightened alert. This decision followed a 17% rainfall deficit since September 2025, and an 18% increase in water consumption compared to last year. Agricultural, industrial, and artisanal sectors now face specific limitations on water use to promote conservation and solidarity.

Authorities have conducted inspections, revealing a 68% non-compliance rate with water regulations, resulting in 41 legal actions. Prefect Girier urged residents, professionals, and tourists to adopt strict water-saving behaviors, especially during the upcoming peak consumption period around August 15. He also warned of possible further restrictions as the ongoing heatwave drives up temperatures, increasing evaporation and stressing aquatic ecosystems.
