From June 2 to 6, 2025, France hosted the 34th session of the Codex Alimentarius Committee on General Principles (CCGP) in Lille, coinciding with the committee's 60th anniversary. The gathering included representatives from over 60 countries who worked on revising the operational rules of the Codex Alimentarius, which aims to enhance scientific rigor and procedural clarity in food safety standards.
Opening remarks were made by Annie Genevard, Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, and Véronique Louwagie, Minister Delegate for Commerce and Small Enterprises. Genevard underscored the commitment of France and the European Union to uphold scientific knowledge in addressing food system risks, while Louwagie emphasized the need for healthier and fairer food practices, which are essential for transforming agro-food systems.
Jean-Luc Angot, the General Inspector of Veterinary Public Health, chaired the session and announced Loïc Evain as his successor. He highlighted the importance of global trade regulations and the need to tackle One Health and innovation in future discussions.
Additionally, a seminar on June 7 marked the International Day of Food Safety, focusing on advancements in risk assessment methodologies to enhance food safety protocols. The Codex Alimentarius functions under the auspices of the FAO and WHO to establish internationally recognized standards for safe food production.
