France Joins European Military Mission in Greenland Amid US-Denmark Tensions

France has announced its participation in a European military mission to Greenland alongside Germany, Sweden, and other allied nations to support Denmark amid escalating tensions with the United States. The mission seeks to assess military contributions aimed at bolstering Denmark’s security in the Arctic region, particularly focusing on maritime surveillance capabilities.

The French contingent will include about 15 soldiers deployed for a "cold weather" joint exercise with Danish forces. Germany is sending a reconnaissance team of 13 Bundeswehr members to Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, as part of an "exploration of Greenland" from January 15 to 17. Sweden and Norway are also set to send troops to assist Denmark in this strategic operation.

This initiative comes in response to concerns sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump's expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen highlighted a "fundamental disagreement" with the U.S. regarding Greenland’s status, emphasizing Denmark’s desire for cooperation that respects its autonomy. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen underscored the importance of respecting the interests of Greenland’s inhabitants, stating, "Greenland belongs to its inhabitants."

The mission represents a significant European effort to support Denmark and maintain regional stability in the face of perceived U.S. ambitions. The exercises and reconnaissance aim to evaluate the conditions for future military involvement to safeguard territorial integrity and maritime security in Greenland.
