France Records Its Hottest Summer Ever in 2026 with Intense Heatwaves and Droughts

France experienced its hottest summer on record in 2026, with unprecedented heatwaves and severe drought conditions, according to Monique Barbut, Minister of Ecological Transition. This summer saw temperatures soar far beyond historical averages, averaging 3.6°C above normal daily temperatures, setting a new benchmark that surpasses previous records from 2003 and 2022. The country endured 53 days of heatwaves—the highest ever recorded—with 45% of French territory experiencing temperatures exceeding 40°C on 178 occasions.

These extreme temperatures represent an increase of about 5°C above pre-industrial levels, with 2.4°C of warming attributed directly to climate change. Additionally, ocean waters surrounding France, particularly the Mediterranean Sea, warmed dramatically by up to 2.8°C, further emphasizing the widespread impact of this heat.

The summer was also marked by a severe lack of precipitation, resulting in a 40% deficit compared to typical levels, making it the second driest summer since 1959. This drought severely affected ecosystems and agriculture and contributed to a sharp increase in wildfires, which burned six times more land area than the average over the past two decades.

During a presentation at Météo-France, Barbut stressed the urgent necessity for adaptive measures in response to these extreme climate events. She highlighted the need for comprehensive efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare the country for increasingly severe climate challenges in future summers.
