François Bayrou Proposes Unified Primary to Counter Extremism in 2027 French Presidential Election

François Bayrou has detailed his proposal for a primary election designed to unite candidates from the center-left and center-right ahead of the 2027 French presidential election. The goal of this primary is to select a single candidate who can effectively challenge extremist contenders such as Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

Speaking at the MoDem’s event in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Bayrou stressed the urgent need for unity among these political forces, warning that division would risk electoral setbacks for the mainstream. His plan calls for candidates to secure sponsorship from ten parliamentarians by the end of October. This would be followed by a two-month period of debates and public meetings, culminating in the first round of voting scheduled for mid-January 2027, and a runoff two weeks later if needed.

Bayrou’s initiative has already reached out to key figures across the center-left and center-right political spectrum to back the effort, emphasizing the importance of legitimacy and broad support in selecting a candidate able to represent a united front.

This proposal emerges amid a broader political context marked by challenges within the left, including the return of former socialist candidate Ségolène Royal to the left primary race. Royal, reflecting on President Emmanuel Macron’s tenure and pressing issues like purchasing power, offers an alternative stance but does not directly address Bayrou’s call for a cross-spectrum primary, highlighting the fragmented nature of the political landscape.

By advocating for a joint primary, Bayrou aims to prevent a split vote among moderate candidates, which he sees as paving the way for extremism. He stated that the country must avoid electoral mistakes and stressed that finding common ground is essential to securing future political stability in France.

As the October deadline for sponsorship approaches, Bayrou’s proposal is positioning itself as a pivotal effort to reshape the presidential race dynamics, potentially consolidating moderate voters and presenting a formidable challenge to extremist candidates.
