French Government Demands Transparency Over Capgemini's Controversial ICE Contract

Capgemini, a prominent French IT multinational, is under scrutiny for its contract with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which involves aiding in the location and identification of foreign individuals. This partnership has raised concerns within France about the ethical implications and government oversight of such collaborations.

French Economy Minister Roland Lescure has officially requested Capgemini to provide full transparency regarding its operations with ICE. The issue was discussed recently in a segment led by Roselyne Febvre, who highlighted the challenges the French government faces in influencing or intervening in the actions of its private corporations operating internationally.

The controversy aligns with broader national concerns about technological sovereignty. In response to growing dependencies on American technology firms, France has launched the Digital Sovereignty Observatory, an initiative aimed at reducing Europe's reliance on foreign digital services. The observatory seeks to map current digital dependencies, provide strategic tools to public and private sectors, and promote European software alternatives, including the French video conferencing platform Visio.

Clément Beaune, High Commissioner for Strategy and Planning, underlined the critical need to support local innovators and regulate the innovation landscape to ensure France's and Europe’s technological independence amid rising geopolitical tensions.
