French Government Deploys A400M Aircraft to Combat Gironde Wildfires

In response to the historic wildfires devastating the Gironde region, the French government has mobilized significant military resources to aid firefighting efforts. On the request of Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, an A400M military transport aircraft equipped with an experimental fire retardant dropping kit developed by Airbus has been deployed starting Saturday.

This aircraft is capable of releasing up to 20 tonnes of fire retardant in a single pass, a capacity equivalent to that of two traditional Canadair firefighting planes. The deployment aims to reinforce efforts against the wildfire that has already scorched over 32,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of approximately 167,000 people.

The exceptional scale of the fires prompting such measures highlights the severity of the crisis facing Gironde. The use of military technology marks a notable escalation in the French state’s intervention to control the extensive damage and protect the large displaced population.

The A400M’s involvement, confirmed by Matignon, represents an innovative approach to wildfire suppression, integrating advanced military aviation assets into civilian emergency response. Officials hope this new capability will bolster containment and mitigation actions in the face of this unprecedented natural disaster.
