On June 3, 2025, the French government launched a citizen consultation aimed at shaping the national strategy for the social and solidarity economy (ESS), which will run until July 11. Seeking the insights of 2,000 participants, the government emphasizes the importance of gathering diverse opinions to enhance the attractiveness and development of the ESS.
The consultation involves eight tailored questions depending on participants' familiarity with the ESS. Non-ESS workers will be asked about their awareness of the sector and to suggest three priorities, while active ESS participants will offer feedback on governance, financing, and strategy priorities. Each response is designed to take approximately five minutes to complete, making participation accessible.
This initiative aligns with a broader agenda set by the European Union, urging member states to develop their ESS strategies by year-end, which must include strong financing and monitoring mechanisms. Minister Véronique Louwagie highlighted the need for a bold strategy, aiming to clarify the ESS's direction, boost recognition, and systematically organize public action in its favor.
Additionally, the government is facilitating dialogues with institutional actors and financial backers, previously evidenced by the ESS Funders Conference in April. Furthermore, 16 territorial workshops are scheduled across various cities through June and early July, focusing on governance, financing, and adapting to social and environmental changes.
