Heat Wave Triggers Multiple Wildfires in Corsica and Vienne, France

A significant heat wave sweeping through France on June 13, 2026, has ignited several wildfires, particularly in Corsica and the Vienne region, challenging firefighting efforts and raising fire risk alerts.

The most severe blaze erupted in the Corsican maquis near Porto-Vecchio, where 60 firefighters and ten fire trucks were deployed alongside Canadair aircraft dispatched from Hyères to combat the spreading flames. Local resident Aurélie Noël described the situation vividly: "There was smoke everywhere, and the Canadairs were flying overhead, making it hard to see the mountains due to the thick haze."

Meanwhile, in the Vienne region, a wildfire affected approximately 10 to 15 hectares, with local farmers assisting firefighters in containment efforts. Although authorities reported the fire was contained by the evening, it remained uncontrolled, indicating ongoing hazards.

Authorities issued an orange alert for fire risks across ten departments amid the heat wave, cautioning residents about heightened dangers. Despite warnings, some residents, particularly in Marseille, ignored prohibitions and engaged in barbecuing near the beach, further exacerbating risks.

The combined challenges of soaring temperatures and human activities during this heat wave have intensified the threat of wildfires, prompting heightened vigilance by emergency services and local authorities to protect vulnerable areas and populations.
